The road to success: The importance of apprenticeships and long-term careers at Steadplan.

In today’s fast-paced world, the value of hands-on experience and long-term career development cannot be overstated. For young people looking to embark on a fulfilling and sustainable career path, apprenticeships offer an unmatched opportunity to gain practical skills while earning a wage. Here at Steadplan, the importance of apprenticeships is no more exemplified than through the inspiring stories of Tom Hargreaves and Lee Hookham. Both started out as apprentices in our Rochdale depot and have risen through the ranks to become Depot Managers, showcasing the long-term career potential with us.

Starting from the ground up: Tom Hargreaves’ journey.

Tom Hargreaves’ career at Steadplan began humbly in 2005 when he joined as a Saturday lad while still at school. At the age of 15, Tom was eager to get a head start in the industry, and his enthusiasm did not go unnoticed. The following year, he secured a full-time position as a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) Apprentice through a partnership with training provider Training 2000. Over the next three years, Tom’s dedication and hard work saw him progress through various roles in different Steadplan depots, gaining invaluable experience along the way.

By 2011, Tom had established himself at the Rochdale depot. His commitment and skill led him from the workshop floor to the position of Workshop Foreman. But his career trajectory did not stop there. Tom transitioned into an office-based role as a Service Manager and is now the Depot Manager at Rochdale. Reflecting on his journey, Tom says: “It requires some graft but if you’re willing to work hard, it’s a great career to get into. There’s always room for growth and progression at Steadplan for those that want it. It’s something I’ve benefited from and plenty of others as well.”

Tom’s story highlights the importance of giving young people a chance to prove themselves. Our commitment to nurturing talent is evident in the varied opportunities we provide, from workshop roles to administrative positions. As Tom notes: “We currently have one apprentice in the Rochdale workshop at the moment but we’re looking for another apprentice administrator in the office so the opportunities are varied in this industry.”

Lee Hookham: From apprentice to leader.

Lee Hookham’s journey at Steadplan mirrors Tom’s in many ways. Joining as a HGV Apprentice at 17, Lee started on the workshop floor alongside Tom. With Steadplan’s support, he gained all the necessary qualifications, including an NVQ Level 3 from Manchester College and his truck licenses. Additionally, Lee received specialist training from MAN, enhancing his skills and knowledge in the field.

Lee’s hard work and dedication led him to the position of Workshop Foreman at the Rochdale depot, where he worked alongside Tom. When the opportunity arose to become the Depot Manager at Leeds, Lee grabbed it with both hands and continued his upward trajectory within the company.

Reflecting on his experience, Lee says: “I was lucky to be given a chance by Steadplan at a young age and they have supported me ever since, helping me to progress and giving me opportunities to work my way up from the workshop floor to Depot Manager.”

Lee emphasises the supportive culture we foster here at Steadplan, stating: “It’s an ethos that has been instilled from the very top of the company all the way down. The apprentices working with us now know that the opportunities are there if they want them, and we’ll do everything we can to help them get to where they want to be.”

The bigger picture: Steadplan’s commitment to apprenticeships.

The success stories of Tom and Lee are testament to our dedication to apprenticeships and long-term career development. We understand that nurturing young talent is crucial not only for the individuals but also for the future of our company and the industry as a whole. By offering apprenticeships, we provide a structured pathway for young people to develop their skills, gain experience and advance their careers.

Starting a career in the commercial vehicle industry may seem daunting, but with the right support and opportunities, it can be incredibly rewarding. As Lee advises: “It’s never easy when you first start out but if you stick with it, work hard and be patient, the career is a very rewarding one.”

Apprenticeships at Steadplan offer a golden opportunity for young people to build a long-term career. With dedicated support, ample opportunities for progression and a culture that values hard work and perseverance, Steadplan continues to pave the way for future leaders in the commercial vehicle industry.
